Just kidding, I've been over summer for a LONG time already-Finland will do that to a person. I can't say I've ever been very fond of Summer. Don't get me wrong, I love the free(ish) time and getting to enjoy being outside, but fashion wise, Fall is just the better season hands down. But, in respects of summer being over, I thought I would pay tribute even though I've been in favour of Fall... because I'm polite and summer deserves to know I do appreciate it. This summer's been good; recovered from a hefty lifestyle change, spent a lot of time working and gaining industry experience, met some great people over the course of the last few months, caught up with friends and family I haven't seen since I moved away, and had some huge epiphanies on where I see my life heading in the next few years, and quite frankly, I'm very excited about things. So Summer, thank you, it's been real. |
But now, I'm officially ready for it to be acceptable to wear turtle necks...
And (faux) fur....
I may have jumped the gun a little today tho...the last day of summer decided to go out with a bang, and I was well overdressed for the weather. But in my defence, it was cold for a solid 20 minutes on my commute into uni this morning... so fur vest justified.
Excuse me while I re-adjust a thousand layers...
There is nothing I absolutely love more than layering- and living in Finland, you get pretty good at it. I mean, when I was there, I purchased a leather jacket to wear UNDER wool coats... that's how creative you have to get when it comes to staying warm. But aesthetically, its also super cool. So if there's anything I learned about fashion from my time living in Helsinki, it was that fashion was incredibly practical, functional, and fashionable. If it didn't serve a purpose AND look good... they weren't wearin' it!
I adapted to functional/fashionable layering quite quickly... because if I didn't, I would have froze to death. And fashionably dying of hypothermia in Finland was not the way I wanted to go. These layering techniques flew back to Canada with me, and I've been inspired to play a lot more with fashion recently because of the different cultures I was exposed to while travelling.
Although keeping this look relatively simple colour scheme wise, the different textures and layers make it interesting. I paired charcoal grey ripped skinny jeans with my classic black leather chelsea booties and a grey textured sweater that I had made in a twelfth grade sewing class. After checking the weather (and being lied to again....) I layered a suede black leather jacket over the sweater, and finished it off with a white and grey faux fur vest, and tied my hair back in a low maintenance low bun (which has been once of my favourite hairstyles recently, simply because I don't have to do anything to it).
